Mayo MedAir Staff
Medical team
The flight team may include registered nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists or other specialists with expertise in trauma, emergency care, neurology, pediatrics, neonatal care or other specialties, depending on the patient's needs. At least two medical staff people are on board. They have multiple education certifications including Advanced Cardiac Life Support and have specific training in flight safety and flight physiology.
Medical director
Mayo MedAir's medical director is responsible for the overall quality of the program. The director is a Mayo Clinic physician trained in emergency medicine. A medical director's expertise and involvement is vital because providing medical care in an airplane is complicated and presents different challenges than providing care in a hospital.
Pilots
Two pilots are required for every flight. The pilot-in-command has a minimum of 2,000 hours of flying time with at least 500 in a multiengine aircraft. The requirements for the second pilot are similar but less stringent. These highly trained and experienced pilots are dedicated emergency medical services (EMS) pilots, meaning that they are full time professionals who fly air medical missions exclusively.
A Cessna Citation V jet aircraft is used for most flights. Arrangements can also be made for international travel on the most appropriate aircraft. All aircraft used by Mayo MedAir are configured as mobile intensive care units and are only used for medical transports, unlike many services, our aircraft do not fly charter flights or freight.
