Mayo MedAir Medical Expertise
Our planes are staffed by medical teams made up of Mayo Clinic medical professionals who treat adult and pediatric patients. Nurses, neonatal and pediatric specialists, paramedics and respiratory therapists are selected based on the patient's needs.
The medical equipment and medications on board make Mayo MedAir a mobile intensive care unit, a flying ambulance equipped to handle any patient whether they be moderately or critically ill. The flight team is supported by a team of specialists and critical-care physicians at Mayo Clinic, who are available for telephone consultations.
The supplies on board include an external defibrillator, an external pacemaker and more than 60 medications. Critical-care procedures that can be performed include chest tube placement, cricothyroidomy (surgical airway), central and arterial line placement and intubation.
A Mayo Clinic Emergency Medical Physician oversees Mayo MedAir and works with the team to implement patient care protocols and monitor the overall quality of care.
