Flight team

Mayo One is staffed by at least two medical professionals. Mayo One-Rochester is staffed by two critical care nurses. In Eau Claire, Mayo One is staffed by a critical-care nurse and a critical-care paramedic. Neonatal and pediatric specialty teams from Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester are available when needed.

The in-flight team is supported by specialists at Mayo Clinic in Rochester and at Luther Hospital -- in Eau Claire (part of the Mayo Health System), who are available for telephone consultations.

Both Saint Marys Hospital and Luther Hospital are accredited trauma centers. The recognition by the American College of Surgeons recognizes health care facilities that have the resources and staff to deliver the highly specialized and demanding level of care required for trauma patients.

Medical director

A Mayo Clinic emergency medicine specialist oversees Mayo One in Rochester and a Luther Hospital trauma surgeon oversees Mayo One in Eau Claire. A pediatric consultant oversees pediatric and neonatal care. The physicians work with the paramedics and nurses to implement patient care protocols, monitor continuous quality improvement, conduct and complete medical research, and organize emergency medical services education events.

Medical equipment

The medical equipment and medications on board make Mayo One a mobile emergency room equipped to handle nearly any patient with serious trauma or who is moderately to critically ill. Sophisticated on-board equipment allows the flight team to monitor a patient's heart rate, blood pressure, temperature and carbon dioxide and oxygen levels. The flight team uses external defibrillators, external pacemakers and other advanced-level equipment. Blood is carried when needed. From the Rochester base, Mayo One carries a portable lab analyzer that measures arterial blood gases and other lab values.
